Description
Nos 133 to 139 Mile End Road are a pair of mid 18th century houses that stand three storeys tall and are constructed of multi-coloured stock brick. Each house features five window bays and has a parapet along the top. The slate roof adds to the overall character of the buildings. Nos 137-139 have been reduced to first floor level, making them incomplete. The houses have gauged flat red brick arches above recessed sash windows, which are divided by glazing bars, and they also feature stone cills. A heavy brick cornice runs along the second floor level. The ground storeys are obscured by later projecting shop fronts.
Inside, Nos 137-139 retain original interior ornamentation, including well-preserved panelled first floor rooms with cornices, dadoes, and chimney pieces. Some original features can still be found in Nos 133-135, such as panelling, cornices, finely carved wooden chimney pieces with egg and dart ovolo mouldings, and a remnant of the original staircase.
