Description

This is an 18th-century gate with overthrow situated at number 29 of a terrace of houses on the north-west side of Stepney Green. The terrace, numbers 29 to 35 (odd), is constructed of brown brick with tiled roofs, and consists of two storeys, basements, and dormers. Most windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set in flush frames. Numbers 29 and 31 have flat arches that are stuccoed, while numbers 33 and 35 feature red arches, segmental arches, and red dressings. The doorcase at number 29 is of particular interest, featuring a pediment and patterned fanlight. Doorcases at numbers 33 and 35 have panelled sides, a panelled frieze under a heavy cornice, and pilasters. The interiors of the terrace houses contain good staircases and panelled rooms. Wrought iron railings lead to the entrance steps, and a good wrought iron gate with a decorative overthrow and lamp holders is located at number 29. The gate and overthrow are of group value with the adjoining properties at numbers 27A to 37 (odd).
