Description
Sonning House is a building from 1899 located on Swanfield Street in the Boundary Estate. It features rounded glazed corners up to shoulder height, with a ground floor made of red brick that serves as a plinth. Above this, the building is constructed with yellow stock bricks accented by red brick bands and dressings. It has a heavy red brick eaves cornice and a slate roof, rising to four storeys with dormers. The corner facades are slanted, showcasing paired sash windows beneath Flemish style gables. The central section has paired gables along the facade, with additional gables on either side. In total, there are sixteen sash windows with contemporary glazing bars set under flat lintels, and the windows are paired under the gables. Brick pilasters divide the windows between the first and third floors.
The Boundary Estate is notable as an early London County Council estate, recognized for its advanced design for the time. It features a variety of architectural details and is organized around a central raised park in Arnold Circus. The entire estate is considered a cohesive group, including several streets such as Arnold Circus, Boundary Street, Calvert Avenue, and others.
