Description

Hurley House is a building constructed in 1899, located on the Boundary Estate in Arnold Circus, E2. It features a red brick glazed ground floor with a stuccoed string course above. The roof is slate with a bracketed eaves cornice. The building stands four storeys tall, with an additional storey under the gable. Above the ground floor, there are three window bays set in banded red and orange brickwork. The gable also has similar banding, separated from the third floor by a red brick cornice and frieze. The windows have red brick arches, except for those in the gable end, which feature a round arched orange brick tympanum, while the sides have flat arches. The ground floor windows are adorned with stucco mullions and surrounds, and there is a central doorway with a bracketed pediment above. The rear corner of the building is canted.

The Boundary Estate is recognized as an early London County Council estate, notable for its advanced design for the time. It showcases a variety of architectural details and features streets that radiate from a central raised park in Arnold Circus. The entire estate is considered a cohesive group, including the surrounding streets such as Arnold Circus, Boundary Street, Calvert Avenue, Camlet Street, Club Row, Hocker Street, Ligonier Street, Montclare Street, Naverre Street, Old Nichol Street, Palissy Street, Rochelle Street, Swanfield Street, and Virginia Street.
