Description

Chertsey House dates to 1899 and is part of the Boundary Estate, an early London County Council development notable for its innovative design. Located within Arnold Circus, the estate’s streets radiate from a central raised park and the entire area is considered a cohesive group.

The building is constructed of red brick, with a white stone moulded string course above the ground floor, which features glazing. Salmon pink banding decorates the brickwork of the second and third floors, the central gable, and the chimneys. The banding widens towards the top of the building. A slate mansard roof tops the structure. There are four storeys and dormers, and five storeys beneath the central gable. The facade has nine windows, all sashes with segmental heads and glazing bars. The central three bays beneath the gable have crow-stepped ends and a curved central feature. The outer two bays become three-light chamfered oriel bays between the first and third floors, with a stucco base. A central window is recessed within a banded arched shape. The windows on the fourth floor have stucco tympana, above which is a roundel. The central ground floor entrance is a round arched doorway with a chequered tympanum, flanked by short stucco pilasters and narrow side windows. These flanking windows are three-light with stuccoed mullions and surrounds.
