Description

The following building shall be added: ALIE STREET TQ 3481 (north-west side) 788-/15/10056 St George's German and English Infants' School GV II

Infants' School, dated 1856, on the German Lutheran graveyard closed in 1853. Stock brick with polychromatic brick details, slate roof. Two-and-a-half by three bays, two storeys. Each floor is a single room, the upper reached by a long, gently rising stone stair to left. Wooden casements with wrought-iron opening lights, those to the ground floor square, those to the upper floor with pointed arches under red and black gauged brick heads; each pair is grouped between pilasters with banded red brickwork continuing as courses through building. Gable with polychromatic diapering and stone trefoil. Date plaque in pointed arch over entrance, which has arched door under segmental head. The upper floor is believed to have a king-post roof hidden under C20 false ceiling. Included for its historical interest and group value, the building makes a picturesque complement to the later red-brick school for older boys and girls alongside.
