Description

St George's German and English Infants' School is an infants' school built in 1856, located on the former German Lutheran graveyard that closed in 1853. The building is constructed of stock brick with polychromatic brick details and features a slate roof. It has a layout of two-and-a-half by three bays and rises to two storeys. Each floor consists of a single room, with access to the upper floor via a long, gently rising stone stair on the left side.

The windows are wooden casements with wrought-iron opening lights; the ground floor windows are square, while those on the upper floor have pointed arches beneath red and black gauged brick heads. Each pair of windows is framed by pilasters, with banded red brickwork that continues as courses throughout the building. The gable displays polychromatic diapering and a stone trefoil. Above the entrance, there is a date plaque set in a pointed arch, and the entrance itself features an arched door beneath a segmental head. The upper floor is believed to have a king-post roof that is concealed by a 20th-century false ceiling.

This building is noted for its historical interest and group value, as it complements the later red-brick school for older boys and girls situated alongside it.
