Description
Lakenham First School, originally known as the Infants' School, was built in 1863 and is located on Hospital Lane. The building is constructed of yellow brick and features a hipped slate roof. It stands two stories tall and has a symmetrical façade with eleven first-floor windows. The central bay slightly projects and includes a double-leaf panelled door topped by a fanlight with glazing bars, all set within a recessed round-headed moulded and gauged brick arch.
The ground-floor windows are round-headed with glazing bars, although one is missing, and they are positioned under gauged brick arches linked by a moulded string course. The building has projecting hipped gable-fronted end wings. The first-floor windows are sashes with glazing bars, placed under flat gauged brick arches, and there is a plain sill band. The eaves overhang and are supported by paired brackets, while cast iron lion masks adorn the gutters. To the right, there is a three-bay wing in a similar style that is set back. Tablets flanking the main door provide information about the history of the foundation.
