Description

The former primary school, originally known as the Old Infants School, was built in 1835 and is located on Swindon Street in Highworth. This small Gothic-style building is constructed of stone with a slate roof and is situated in a visually significant position. The front façade features two storeys of coursed rubble and includes two large ashlar chimneys. The layout consists of three bays, with the outer bays likely added around 1840, and has chamfered corners.

At the center, there is a gable with a coping for a bellcote and a panel underneath. The gable is flanked by two small-pane glazing bar sash windows. A projecting stone porch with chamfered piers leads to a six-panel door, which is flanked by modern glazed sun parlours. Each side wing contains a two-light glazing bar casement window on the first floor, with quoins, and the right-hand wing features a triangular-headed ledged door.

On the return side, there is one bay with triangular-headed windows on the ground floor. The building was extended to the south in the 1850s, adding three school rooms that consist of three bays with simplified 'Y' tracery windows leading up to two taller gables of cross buildings, which display the initials 'AC' and 'RE' at their apexes. The interior of the later school rooms features arch-braced collar trusses.
