Description

The former Primary Infant School, now a museum store, was built in 1892 and extended in 1900. It was designed by architects Alexander & Herman. The building is constructed of brick with terracotta dressings and features Westmoreland slate roofs with tall brick chimneys. It is two storeys high.

The south front has ten windows arranged in a pattern of three, one, two, one, and three. The recessed centre contains four small windows set in tall segmental arches, with glazing bar sashes above. Above these are two three-light sash windows, topped by a central stack flanked by double glazing bar windows with segment arched tops. On either side, there are projecting single bays with hipped roofs and attached porches in terracotta, featuring curved arches inscribed with "SENIOR BOYS" to the left and "SENIOR GIRLS" to the right, both having double panelled doors and sidelights. Above these porches are pairs of sashes with terracotta panels in the parapet. The projecting outer blocks have five tall cross casement windows with segment arched heads, and above them are two tall gabled cross casements, with a single plain cross casement beyond.

The north front, facing the playground, features eight windows in a deeply recessed centre with outer doors and six central windows, topped by eight glazing bar windows arranged in pairs. The outer projecting classroom blocks have six cross casement windows on either side, all with segmental brick heads, and above them are three tall gabled cross casement windows on either side.
