Description

19A Leman Street is a former dispensary, now disused, that was built in 1858 and designed by architect G. H. Simmonds. The building is made of unpainted stucco and has a roof that is not visible. It consists of two storeys plus a basement and features seven bays, with the central five bays slightly projecting forward. The exterior includes rusticated quoins and channelling on the ground floor.

The central entrance is round-headed and corniced, with a balcony above. The ground floor has square-headed, keystoned windows in the central five bays and round-headed windows in the outer bays. The upper floor has square-headed, architraved windows with alternating segmental and triangular pediments above the central five bays, except for the center bay, which has a cartouche stucco band between the storeys inscribed with the words "supported by voluntary contributions." There is also a stucco band at the parapet, although the cornice has been removed. This building was originally established as the East London Dispensary to provide free medical and surgical assistance to the poor.
