Description
The Licensed Victuallers' Benevolent Institution, also known as Caroline Gardens, is a back range of former almshouses that includes a day centre, built between 1849 and 1866 by Henry Rose. The structure is made of stock brick with a stucco cornice and a plain blocking course. It has a splayed U-plan layout with a projecting section at the end of the south arm, featuring lanes that lead through and houses that face out in both directions.
The exterior consists of houses that are two storeys high and three bays wide. Each house has stucco angle pilasters, with some sections slightly projecting and defined by pilasters. The entrances feature double doors in plain reveals with oblong overlights above. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are topped with gauged, cambered brick arches. There is a stucco string course above the first floor, with a brick string course below.
The day centre wing projects northwards by four bays and has a north elevation that is two storeys tall with three main bays. It features two doorways at the centre flanked by pilasters that support an entablature, with a blind arcade of four above. Other openings have eared architraves, while the first-floor openings are blind. The elevation continues with a stucco cornice and blocking course, topped with an acroterion over the centre.
The street elevation is also two storeys high and three bays wide, adorned with a stucco architrave, frieze, cornice, and pediment supported by four giant Doric pilasters. The central door and sash windows have stucco architraves, with ground floor windows featuring panels below. There is a sill band at the first floor and a low stucco plinth. To the left, there is a later, more ornate three-storey, one-bay projecting extension, which has stucco angle pilasters with decorative capitals supporting an entablature with a modillion cornice and pediment. This extension features a full-height bow window facing the street and a pedimented entrance with a keyed oculus above to the right, along with sill bands on each floor.
The interior has not been inspected. Nos. 111-176 Caroline Gardens are part of a large complex that consists of double U-shaped ranges surrounding a central garden with a wide court in between.
