Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Anne, built between 1903 and 1907 by F A Walters, is a Grade II listed building located on Kennington Lane. This dark red brick church features slated roofs and is designed in an early English style, characterized by its projecting buttresses. The church has a nave and aisles that are unified without a clerestory, a low west narthex, short transepts, and a lower two-bay chancel with short, low aisles. Although the church is aligned north-south, the directions provided are ritual.
A tall, saddleback tower with four stages is situated at the north-west corner, showcasing paired lancets, large bell openings in the top stage, and three stepped lancets in the gable. Inside, the spacious five-bay nave has narrow aisles divided into one-bay sections. There is a large chapel extension behind a wrought iron screen from the north aisle. The chancel features a carved stone octagonal pulpit with a sounding-board and a low arcaded wall before the chancel steps, all adorned with bright stencil patterns. The chancel also includes a carved and painted reredos, with rood figures suspended from the roof and resting on a beam, as there is no screen present.
