Description

The Church of St Peter, built between 1863 and 1864 by J L Pearson, is a Grade II* listed building located on Kennington Lane. The church is oriented north-south, although this description refers to ritual directions. It features polychrome brick with stone dressings and slated roofs. The structure includes a nave, low aisles, and a projecting narthex, with a north transept leading into a chancel aisle and an apsidal chancel. There is an extension to the south-west, which was intended to include a tower and spire that were never constructed. The design is in the style of the 13th century, characterized by lancet windows or large windows with simple plate tracery, as well as a wheel window high in the west gable. A small conical bell tower is situated to the south.

Inside, the church is light and spacious, with the nave flowing directly into the chancel. The entire church, including the aisles and narthex, features rib vaulting with brick panels. The design and craftsmanship are of a high standard and remain virtually unaltered. There is a gallery around the apse, and wrought iron front and side screens lead to a raised choir, which has a low wall connecting to an elaborately carved stone pulpit adorned with pictorial panels of painted stone and gold. The interior also includes a mosaic and marble reredos, carved marble sedilia and piscina, and a square stone front with a painted border and a tall ornamental font cover.
