Description
Former St Peter's School, built between 1860 and 1861 by J L Pearson, is a two-storey building made of stock brick, featuring bands and dressings of red brick and Bath stone. It has tiled roofs and showcases an irregular composition in a picturesque Gothic style, characterized by steeply pitched roofs and tall chimneys. The windows are mullioned, with some displaying pointed or cusped lights. The south end of the building includes the former master's house, which has a half-hipped gable end. The former school is located to the north of the entrance arch, which connects with the house and the east end of St Peter's Church, creating an irregular courtyard. The entrance to the school is on the west side of the courtyard, situated beneath a pyramidal tower. There have been some later alterations to the ground floor fenestration on the north side of the courtyard. To the north of the main building, the former art school at numbers 34-36 and a soup kitchen, both also designed by Pearson, remain but have been altered and are not included in the listing. The foundation stone for the schools was laid by the Prince of Wales on June 27, 1860.
