Description

Following the Leader (Memorial to the Children Killed in the Blitz) is a sculptural relief created in 1949 by Peter Laszlo Peri. It is made of red ochre coloured concrete laid over expanded metal mesh and measures 4.73 meters tall and 1.65 meters wide. The relief features a naturalistic depiction of six children linked by their hands, cascading down the wall. The group emerges from a narrow two-stage concrete plinth that stands out from the wall. Originally, the composition was framed by dark coloured pointing against the yellow stock brick to enhance its visibility, but this has since been replaced with standard mortar. The relief is mounted on the stair tower of Darley House, which is not listed.
