Description
Herbert House, built between 1860 and 1862 by J.L. Pearson, was originally St Peter's Orphanage and Training College for the daughters of clergy and professionals. This three-storey building is constructed of stock brick, featuring bands and dressings of Bath stone, with a tiled roof and tall brick chimneys. It showcases a High Victorian Gothic style with French influences. The facade is flat with irregularly spaced windows, most of which have blank arches over ornamental brick tympana. A small gable on the left of the center protrudes through a brick dentilled cornice, and there is a half-hipped gable at the east end. At the rear, a turret with a conical cap adds to the structure's character. The entrance is through a porch that is set back in a small court between the church and the building, supported by a stout balustraded column with chamfered corners.
