Description
St Barnabas Villas is a terrace of three houses built between 1843 and 1850 by John Snell as part of a planned estate. Designed in the Italianate style, the buildings are constructed from stock brick and feature a slate roof with two stock brick chimney stacks. The terrace has two storeys, attics, and a basement.
The facade facing Guildford Road has two windows, while the side facing St Barnabas Villas has seven windows. No 34 features two gabled dormers and three first-floor sash windows with marginal glazing set in stuccoed surrounds. The ground floor has two sashes with verticals only, adorned with cornices on brackets and brackets below the cills. It also includes a porch with round-headed windows and one similar window on the return.
Nos 1 and 2 St Barnabas Villas have three first-floor sashes with marginal glazing in stuccoed surrounds, and the ground floor has two sashes with verticals only, cornices with brackets, and brackets below the cills. These houses feature stuccoed round-headed porches with moulded cornices and brackets, side-lights, and a flight of steps with cast iron balustrading. The terrace has a stuccoed bracket eaves cornice and plinth, along with cast iron spear railings.
Nos 36 Guildford Road, along with Nos 3 and 4 St Barnabas Villas, are identical to this terrace but are arranged as a mirror image. Together, these two terraces create a vista towards Lansdowne Gardens.
