Description

Mandragon House is a house that was formerly a vicarage, built between 1843 and 1850 by John Snell as part of a planned estate for the nearby St Barnabas Chapel, which was constructed from 1848 to 1850. The house is designed in the Jacobean style and is made of stock brick with stuccoed dressings, topped with a slate roof featuring three brick chimneystacks that have stuccoed cornices and terracotta chimneypots.

The building has two storeys, attics, and a basement, with a total of four windows: three in the main range and one in a set-back two-storey bay on the right. It features three curved gables with round-headed windows in the attics. On the first floor, there are three sash windows with marginal glazing, drip moulding, and brackets beneath the window sills. A string course runs along the building. The ground floor windows are adorned with eared architraves and cornices, iron flower guards, and brackets below the window sills. The deep plinth has a casement window in the basement.

To the right, there is a two-storey section with one bay, which includes sash windows with marginal glazing, a rusticated surround, and hood moulding. The left side features a round-headed doorcase with a flight of stone steps that has a stuccoed balustrade. Attached to the extreme right of the house is a former coach house, constructed of stock brick, with a gable topped by a finial and round-headed windows.
