Description

This is a house dating from around 1840, built in the Italianate style. Constructed of stock brick with a stuccoed basement, it has a slate roof. The house has two storeys, attics, and a basement, with a three-window front. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the top of the building. The first floor has three six-pane sash windows. On the ground floor, there are two tall windows with moulded architraves, marginal glazing bars, and elaborate balconettes featuring quartered rectangles and a central quatrefoil. A pilastered recessed doorcase leads to a flight of steps up to the street, with a cast iron hand railing. The later 19th-century panelled front door incorporates two stained glass roundels in the upper two panels. The side elevation has a moulded coping with projecting corner details (knellers), a circular window to the attic, and three arched recesses (blanks). The rear elevation has cambered six-pane windows to the first floor and taller windows with more panes to the ground floor and basement.

Inside, the house retains a complete staircase with two stick balusters per tread, column newels, double-panelled doors connecting the front and rear ground floor rooms, window shutters, and decorative panels below the windows. A wooden fireplace with pilasters and a cast iron firegrate with a shell design remains on the first floor. An original small grate is in the attic, which also has matchboard panelling. The basement includes a cast iron Victorian kitchen range flanked by original cupboards, alongside several four-panelled doors.
