Description

This is a terrace of ten pseudo-semi-detached houses, numbers 14 to 24, St James’s Gardens, London, built between 1847 and 1851 by John Barnett. The houses are constructed of stock brick and stucco, arranged over three storeys and a basement. Each pair of houses has four windows, with recessed outer bays joining them. The ground floor is stuccoed, featuring round-headed windows with architraves and archivolt bands. Stone balconies with low cast iron trellis balustrades are present. A cornice runs over the ground floor, and the first and top floor windows have architrave surrounds and cornices, with cill bands to the top storey. The building is topped with a modillioned cornice and a blocking course. Porches are located in the recessed outer bays, accessed by steps. The main entrance doors are round-headed and panelled. The terrace is part of a larger, unified architectural scheme encompassing numbers 1 to 13 and 42 to 54.
