Description
The arcade, built between 1839 and 1840 by Benjamin Baud, forms the northwest quarter of a circle and avenue in Brompton Cemetery. It features a round arched rusticated stone structure with a brick backing designed for the attachment of memorial plaques. The arcade projects forward at intervals, supported by Doric columns. There are flights of steps leading down into the catacombs at the center of the quadrant and avenue ranges, which are topped by a domed octagonal tower. The arcade is adorned with cast iron gates that display symbols of death. It is part of a cohesive design that includes a chapel and other arcades.
