Description
The tomb of Flight Sub Lieutenant Reginald Warneford VC is located on the northern approach to the Great Circle in Brompton Cemetery. This funerary monument, designed around 1915 by an unknown designer, is made of Portland stone and resembles a Roman altar. It stands on a tall, two-stage base and features a grey granite vault cover in front. The upper part of the monument has an eared pedimental cover with a relief of a Victoria Cross. Below this, flanked by inverted torches, is a portrait relief of Warneford, accompanied by a bay leaf festoon and the words "COURAGE INITIATIVE INTREPIDITY." Below the portrait is a relief depicting Warneford's successful action against a Zeppelin, with the inscription: "ERECTED BY THE READERS OF THE DAILY EXPRESS TO COMMEMORATE THE HEROIC EXPLOIT IN DESTROYING A ZEPPELIN AIRSHIP NEAR GHENT ON JUNE 7 1915."
Reginald Warneford was a pilot in the Royal Naval Air Service and was the first aviator to destroy an airship, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He tragically died in an accident shortly after this achievement. This monument may be one of the earliest public depictions of aerial warfare.
