Description
The Tomb of Barbe Marie Theresa Sangiorgi, located in Brompton Cemetery, is a Grade II listed monument made of marble. It features a sarcophagus set on a plinth, which is surrounded by six square tapered metal posts connected by heavy chains. The lid of the sarcophagus is adorned with two carved palm fronds and a scrolled pillow that supports a relief portrait of Barbe Marie Theresa Sangiorgi. At the back of the lid, there is a pedestal holding a statue of a young man who is scattering flowers on the grave. Beside him lies an open book with a leaded inscription in Italian, detailing the names and dates of Barbe Marie Theresa Sangiorgi (1834-1893) and her husband Giovanni (1848-1909). Giovanni is noted to have been born in Imola, a town near Bologna in Italy, and he died in London, with his burial taking place in Lugano in Swiss-speaking Italy. Both inscriptions conclude with the phrase 'Pace alla sua bell' anima' ('Peace be with his/her spirit'). Additionally, in lead lettering along the chamfered lower edge of the lid, the words 'Morte li divide, ma non l'oblio' ('In death divided, but not forgotten') are inscribed, likely referring to the different burial locations of the couple.
