Description

The Tomb of Herbert Fitch, located in Brompton Cemetery, is a Grade II listed monument dating from the early 20th century. It features a classical aedicule made of Portland stone, positioned alongside the Ceremonial Way. The structure is supported by two square pilasters and two verde marble columns in antis, which are adorned with bronze Corinthian capitals and bases. An entablature above showcases intricate egg-and-dart and bead-and-reel carvings, along with a frieze that reads 'Family Vault of Herbert Fitch'.

Inside the aedicule, there are six stone tablets bordered with green and gold tesserae. These tablets commemorate Herbert Fitch, who died in 1933, his wife Jeannie, who died in 1935, and their sons Herbert Trevor, who died in 1935, Frederick Vernon, who died in 1941, and Clive Evelyn, who died in 1921. The sixth tablet remains blank.

In front of the aedicule is a small 'forecourt' that is enclosed by solid walls and features a mosaic pavement displaying the family coat of arms, which consists of three leopards, along with the motto 'Facta non verba', meaning 'Deeds not words'.
