Description
The Tomb of Alfred Mellon in Brompton Cemetery is a very tall monument that features a mix of Classical and Romanesque styles. It has a square base with a semicircular projection at the front, which is topped by a heavy corbelled canopy that once held a bust of Mellon. The pedestal is battered and includes inset granite panels for inscriptions. The left panel states, "This monument was erected by public subscription to the memory of Alfred Mellon in admiration of his great musical talents and esteem for his many virtues." The right panel features a quotation adapted from Shakespeare's Henry VIII: "The force of his own merit made his way a gift that heaven gave to him." The upper structure consists of four granite columns with leaf capitals that support an arched canopy and a pedimented top. Beneath the canopy is a stone pedestal adorned with carved wreaths that holds a bronze lyre.
