Description

The Tomb of Joseph Bonomi in Brompton Cemetery is a grave marker made of sandstone. It features a curved top with an incised cross and symbols of alpha and omega on either side. The inscription, in capital letters, reads: "In memory of four children who were called out of this life into a better in the Easter week of 1852 ...", followed by the names and ages of the children, who range from 5 years to 8 months old. The dedication concludes with the phrase, "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord."

Next, the inscription lists their grandmother and mother, who passed away in 1858 and 1859 respectively. It continues with details about their father, Joseph Bonomi, who was a sculptor, traveller, and archaeologist, born on 9th October 1796, appointed Curator of Sir John Soane's Museum in 1861, and who died on 3rd March 1878. Below this, there is a hieroglyphic symbol depicting the jackal-headed god Anubis, associated with mummification and the afterlife, guarding a tomb with battered sides and a central door. The final dedication is to Colonel J I Bonomi, who died in 1930.
