Description
The arcade, built between 1839 and 1840 by Benjamin Baud, forms the southeast quarter of a circle and avenue in Brompton Cemetery. It features a round-arched rusticated stone design with a brick backing intended for the installation of memorial plaques. The arcade projects forward at intervals, supported by Doric columns. A flight of steps leads down into the catacombs at the center of the quadrant, and there are cast iron gates adorned with symbols of death. This structure is part of a cohesive layout that includes a chapel and other arcades.
