Description
The Tomb of Blanche Roosevelt Macchetta, located in Brompton Cemetery, features a marble monument set within granite kerbing. The statue represents a woman in classical dress, holding a rose to her chest with her left hand and wearing a bracelet with a shawl clasped in her right. It is likely imported from Italy and resembles a statue of Elaine Lady Faulkiner in Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey, although the heads are individual portraits, with the facial likeness closely matching that of Blanche as seen in photographs from the time.
The statue stands on a rocky plinth with sandalled feet, which has a floral motif carved near the left foot. Below this is a cuboid marble block with chamfered corners on the upper surface, featuring an inset inscription that includes the epitaph: "By her brilliant accomplishments / and rare graces of mind and person / she gave distinction / in the world of literature and art / to the name of Blanche Roosevelt."
The monument is completed by a two-stage plinth; the lower stage is set into the grass, while the upper stage contains further inscriptions, including the renovator's initials, APK, and the lines: "A life that all the muses deck'd / with gifts of grace that might express / all comprehensive tenderness / all subtilising intellect." The monumental masons, who also served as the undertakers, were Griffin House of Regent Street.
