Description
The monument to S. L. Sotheby, located in Brompton Cemetery, is a Grade II listed structure made of grey granite with an inset relief of Carrera marble framed in slate. It features a tall, rough-hewn granite stele that stands approximately 2 meters high, set on a low hexagonal base with a ledger stone in front. The stele displays a round marble relief depicting an angel guiding a couple towards the light, which is surrounded by slate and was originally glazed to protect the marble. The base of the monument is inscribed with the words: "FOR AS IN ADAM ALL DIE EVEN SO IN/ CHRIST ALL SHALL BE MADE ALIVE/ S. LEIGH SOTHEBY/ BORN 1805 DIED 1861."
