Description
Numbers 396 and 398, along with their attached railings, are two early 19th-century terraced houses with mid-19th-century decorative additions. Number 396 is constructed of yellow brick with stucco dressings, arranged over a basement with a two-window front. It features a round-arched entrance with a vermiculated keystone and decorative glazing to the fanlight. The first floor windows have a continuous cast-iron balcony and bracketed pediments. A stucco modillion cornice sits above, topped with a balustraded parapet. Cast-iron railings define the area. Number 398 is built of multi-coloured brick, with stucco to the ground floor. It is three storeys high, with dormers in the attic and a three-window range, double fronted to the main, western facade; two windows are visible on the return facing City Road. The ground floor is rusticated, with steps leading to a round-arched entrance featuring engaged Doric columns, a cornice, a fanlight, and side lights. Flanking the entrance are full-height segmental bays with mullions acting as pilasters, supporting an entablature. The facade is painted. The windows have architraves; the central first-floor window has a bracketed pediment, while those in the segmental bays on this floor are topped with segmental pediments containing enriched tympana. A bracketed cornice and balustraded parapet with ball finials complete the design. On the City Road return is a plaque inscribed ‘DALBY TERRACE’.
