Description
Numbers 372 to 390 (even) on St John Street are terraced houses that have been partly converted into offices. They were built in the early 19th century and are constructed from yellow brick laid in Flemish bond, with a roof of Welsh slate that is visible. The buildings rise four storeys above a basement and generally feature two windows each, except for number 372, which is double-fronted and has three windows.
The entrance to numbers 372 to 376 is round-arched and includes moulded pilaster jambs, circle stops, and a modillion cornice. Number 378 has a plain doorcase, while numbers 380 to 390 feature fluted quarter columns and a modillion cornice. The fanlights above the doors have decorative glazing for numbers 372-374 and 380-390. The panelled doors maintain their original design for numbers 372-374 and 378-390.
The ground-floor windows are segmental-arched with gauged brick heads, and all upper windows are flat-arched, also with gauged brick heads. There are bracketed balconies on the first floor, which are adorned with cast-iron railings. The original design of the 6/6 sash windows is preserved in part for numbers 372, 374 (first floor), 382 (first floor), 384 (first and second floors), and 388 (first floor). The buildings have a parapet and chimney stacks at the party walls. The area railings are of a geometrical design.
