Description
Numbers 27-43 and attached railings form a terrace of eight houses, dating from approximately 1834 to 1839. The buildings are constructed of yellow stock brick, with later patching on the second floor. Numbers 31 and 33 have rendered ground floors, number 35 has a stucco ground floor, number 37 has a painted ground floor, and number 41 has entirely painted facades. A plain stucco sill band runs across the first floor. Most of the houses have slated mansard roofs with dormers, except for numbers 31 and 33. The terrace stands three storeys high with attics (excluding numbers 31 and 33), and basements. Each house has two windows. The ground floor features round-arched openings. The doorways have pilaster-jambs supporting cornice-heads with fanlights; number 29 retains a panelled door, while the others have 20th-century replacements. Number 27 has a single-storey stucco entrance extension on its return to St. Chad’s Street. Gauged brick flat arches are present above the recessed sash and casement windows, most of which are painted. First-floor windows are recessed in a shallow, round-headed style, also mostly painted, and feature cast-iron balconies. There are parapets to the roofs. The interiors have not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings with tasselled spearhead finials mark the areas.
