Description
Nos. 1-4 Mountfort Terrace are a group of four terraced houses built between 1837 and 1847, situated in the southwest section of Barnsbury Square. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with banded stucco to the ground floors and plain stucco to the upper floors. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet, with central brick stacks. The design follows a side-hall entrance plan.
The buildings have projecting end blocks of three storeys and a basement, each featuring three windows. A central block is two storeys high with a basement and attic, containing four windows each. Steps lead to the entrances, which each feature a doorway with pilaster jambs supporting a corniced head, a reeded surround, an original panelled door, and a rectangular overlight with margin lights. The ground floor windows are 6/6 sashes to the end blocks, and 6/6 sashes with 2/2 side-lights to the centre block, all with plain stucco surrounds. First floor windows are 6/6 sashes with full-length architraved surrounds and bracketed cornices. The outer windows of the centre block also have 2/2 side-lights and pedimented cornices. Continuous balconies are supported by iron brackets and have iron railings to the end blocks, while the centre blocks have individual iron balconies. A modillioned cornice runs above the first floor. Second-floor windows in the end blocks are architraved 6/6 sashes, and the centre block has horizontal attic windows. A moulded cornice sits above the second floor. Exposed brick returns are present.
