Description

Nos. 517-523 Liverpool Road are terraced houses dating from the mid-to-late 18th century for Nos. 517-521 and early 19th century for No. 523. They are constructed of brown and yellow brick, with roofs obscured by a parapet. The buildings rise three storeys over a basement; Nos. 517-519 and 523 have a two-window range, while No. 521 has a three-window range.

Nos. 517 and 519 feature entrances from a raised walk with a stuccoed ground floor, decorated on No. 519 with chamfered rustication. They have flat-arched entrances with pilasters that support an enriched frieze and pediment. No. 521 has steps leading up to a round-arched entrance, which includes a complete wooden doorcase with Roman Doric engaged columns supporting an entablature and an open pediment, featuring scrolled decoration in the spandrels and a keystone. It also has a fanlight and a panelled door of original design. No. 523 has steps up to a flat-arched entrance with plain stucco pilasters and a cornice on consoles, along with an overlight and a panelled door of original design.

The ground-floor windows are flat-arched for Nos. 517-521 and cambered for No. 523. The first-floor windows are flat-arched, with gauged red brick heads for Nos. 517-521. The second-floor windows are segmental-arched for No. 517 and flat-arched for Nos. 519-523, which have been rebuilt. The buildings have a parapet and stacks located at the party walls. Nos. 517 and 521 were listed on February 18, 1970.
