Description
No. 15, View Road is a house built in 1905 for Mr J Johnson, designed by George Sherrin FRIBA. It is constructed in a vernacular revival style. The ground floor is of red brick, while the first floor is timber-framed with pebbledashed render infill, topped with tiled roofs and brick chimneystacks. The house is two storeys with part attics, featuring an irregular pattern of windows with leaded lights.
The south front has a projecting gable with two windows to the right and two bays to the left, alongside a conservatory. A prominent porch, situated under the gable, is supported by three Tuscan columns and features a five-light window and a half-glazed door. This door is framed by high relief plaster panels depicting an allegory of Force versus Persuasion, representing the North Wind and the Sun. The inscription around the frieze reads "The North Wind and the Sun. Persuasion is better than Force," with the date 1905 in Roman numerals above the door. The panels illustrate the North Wind, a grim-faced Sun, a figure walking in a calm landscape with a dog, and the effect of the North Wind on the figure and surrounding trees. A smiling Sun is depicted over a seated figure and dog in the final panel.
The west front incorporates a six-light mullioned and transomed square bay to the ground floor, with a gable above containing a four-light mullioned and transomed casement. The north front is characterised by two gables.
Inside, the staircase hall contains an oak staircase with turned balusters and a gallery above. The principal ground floor rooms feature C18-style bolection-moulded fireplaces and panelling, and the west sitting room has sill seating to the large square bay. A first floor bedroom has a wooden fireplace with an eared architrave. Most original features remain intact, including cupboards, although some fireplaces have been removed.
