Description
Nos 97 to 107 on Hertford Road, built in 1839 and known as Benyon Cottages, is a symmetrical group of three pairs of houses, each with two storeys and a basement. The buildings are constructed of stock brick and feature a stucco frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The outer bays project slightly, and the basements are also stuccoed, with axial pilasters on the outer blocks. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are topped with gauged brick arches, and the outer first-floor bays have round-headed windows. The ground floor windows are set in moulded architraves within stucco panels, some of which have cornices above, console brackets, and paterae below. The doors consist of three large panels, topped with a cornice head and a blocked fanlight, all within a rusticated stucco surround that forms voussoirs to the arch and has a cornice above. Access is via four steps with cast iron handrails. There is a recess on the axis of the centre block below the name plaque. Shell mouldings and garlands are present above the windows of Nos 105 and 107. This group of houses forms a notable ensemble with Nos 109 to 115, which are of local interest.
