Description

These are a group of detached houses, dating to around 1840, located at 5-8 Vanbrugh Terrace. Each house is three storeys high with a basement, and has three windows. They have fairly low-pitched, hipped slate roofs with deep eaves soffits. The construction is multicoloured brick with stuccoed facades.

Nos 5 and 6 have a deeply rusticated ground floor, where the rustication forms window voussoirs that extend up to the first floor cill string. There's also a second floor cill string present. The basement level is plain. Moulded architraves frame the first and second floor windows; those on the ground floor feature a heavy pulvinated frieze and dentil cornice. Bracketed cills are present on the ground floor windows. All windows are sash windows with margin lights. A single-storey link connects the houses, with paired Doric prostyle porches featuring a triglyph and bucranium frieze, and a dentil cornice. Six steps lead to four-panel doors with glazed upper panels and rectangular fanlights.

Nos 7 and 8 have a shallow, banded rustication on the ground floor, with a blocking course at first floor level. There are first and second floor cill bands. Moulded architraves frame the first and second floor windows; those on the first floor incorporate pilasters, a cornice, and a pediment. Wood-lined reveals and blind cases feature on the ground floor windows of No 8, along with bracketed cills. A bracketed cill is also present on the first floor windows of No 8. All windows are sash windows with margin lights. No 7 has a discreet entrance on the side return. No 8 has a double door on the left, with glazed upper panels, a cornice head, and a rectangular fanlight with margin lights, set within a wood architrave and a simple entablature surround. A flight of seven steps leads to the door, with a stuccoed side wall.

Nos 1 to 8 (consec) form a group.
