Description

The Salvation Army Mothers' Hospital, front buildings consist of three early 19th-century linked pairs of houses. Each house is three storeys high with a basement, and has two windows. They are built of stock brick with a stone-coped parapet. The windows have replaced sashes, with gauges flat brick arches above. A stucco cill band runs along the first floor. The ground floor windows are set in round-arched recesses. Enclosed angle porches have paired pilasters and wreaths in the frieze, and contain wide, two-panel doors with rectangular fanlights above. Behind the doors are two-storey extensions. Later stuccoed linking sections connect the houses, featuring pilasters, a cornice, and a blocking course, along with an arched entrance. A more modern projecting entrance sits between the second and third blocks. A further north block, dating from the mid-19th century, is three storeys high with a basement, and has three windows. This block is of grey brick with a stuccoed cornice and blocking course, and a first-floor cill band. Moulded architraves frame the ground and first-floor windows, with cornices over the ground-floor windows. The second floor has gauges flat brick arches. All windows are replaced sashes. A half-glazed, four-panel double door, with a rectangular fanlight, is set within a modified entablature surround. Nos. 143 to 155 (odd) are designated as forming a group.
