Description
The United Reformed Church, located on Lower Clapton Road, was built in 1869-71 by H Fuller and is constructed of ashlar stonework in an Italian style. It is a large, two-story building characterized by round-arched windows and extensive arcading. The west end is wide and rounded, featuring a projecting ground floor and a balustraded parapet. Octagonal towers with conical slated roofs flank the east and west ends; the east end has four-stage towers, and the west end has two smaller towers. Four flights of steps radiate from the curved west end and towers. The returns of the building feature full-height arcading, and a raised attic contains round windows.
The interior features a continuous gallery on three sides, supported by cast iron columns. These columns support an upper tier of taller columns that rise to a continuous cast iron arcade with openwork cast iron spandrels. A round-headed archway with Corinthian columns defines the east end. Contemporary features include a pulpit with a double flight of stairs, an organ and organ case at the east end, and timber pews.
The United Reformed Church is part of a group with the adjacent Sunday School at No 1A Glenarm Road.
