Description
No. 48 Bishopsgate is a late 19th-century building designed in a flamboyant Second Empire style. It stands four storeys tall, including a roof-storey, and is three bays wide. The ground floor features a large square-headed opening with a plate glass window and a round-arched entrance. This entrance is adorned with an enriched architrave and a mask key, which is topped by a console bracketed entablature that includes a triglyph frieze and a dentilled cornice.
Above the ground floor, the windows are architraved and pedimented, with the right-hand window slightly set forward and flanked by pilasters that support a balustrade. The windows have wrought iron sill-guards. At the second floor level, there are console bracketed pediments, while the third floor features round-headed windows set between pilasters, with projecting segmental sills and iron guards. The building is capped with a bracketed cornice and a large pedimented central dormer, flanked by two smaller round-headed dormers, all beneath a high pavilion roof made of copper and slate. Additionally, there are wrought iron guard rails along the parapet and ridge of the roof, as well as wrought iron entrance gates and footscrapers.
