Description

This is a mid-19th century building on Railway Street, constructed of ashlar with a hipped slate roof. It is four storeys high and features a deeply moulded eaves cornice with modillions. The design is divided into two slightly dissimilar sections, with a central bay acting as a focal point.

The central bay has a segment-headed carriage entrance on the ground floor. The first and second floors each have tripartite windows contained within moulded frames. The central light on both these floors projects slightly. The first-floor central light is distinguished by a balustrade with vase-shaped balusters, Tuscan pilasters, a quintuple keystone (the central one being gadrooned), and a triangular pediment. Above the pediment, two triglyph-like consoles connect it to the cill of the second-floor window. The second-floor central light has its own frame with a keystone and broken segmental pediment. The third-floor window is simpler, with plain pilasters and brackets to the cornice.

The southern section of the building has raised quoins. It contains five ranges of sash windows. The first floor's windows have moulded surrounds, pulvinated friezes, and cornices; the second-floor windows are linked to them by fluted consoles, with moulded surrounds and triangular pediments on consoles. The third-floor windows have shouldered moulded surrounds.

The northern section is characterized by continuous moulded sill bands to the second and third floors, and a continuous marbled impost band to the ground-floor windows, which are horizontally rusticated below. The building also has a moulded plinth, vermiculated and rusticated quoins, and five ranges of sashes. The ground-floor windows are round-arched with vermiculated keystones. A centrally placed door is set within a concave niche. The first-floor windows feature moulded surrounds, gadrooned keystones, frames with pulvinated friezes and triangular pediments, and balustrades on consoles with vase-shaped balusters. As with the central bay, two triglyph-like consoles connect the pediments to the cills of the second-floor windows, which have moulded surrounds and cornices. The third-floor windows are separated by sunk and moulded panels and have plain pilasters and brackets to the cornices.

The building has a curved end bay facing St George’s Square. The first, second, and third floors mirror the design of the central bay. The ground floor of this section has panelled double doors with a segment-headed fanlight, rusticated jambs with festooned roundels at the top, a moulded impost and transom, a festooned and gadrooned keystone, and a moulded cornice. An area is enclosed by cast iron railings.
