Description
Nos 8 and 10 Railway Street are mid-19th century buildings that form a single composition with Nos 12-20 St George's Square. The structure is built of ashlar and features a hipped slate roof, rising to four storeys and a basement. It has a deeply moulded modillion eaves cornice and continuous moulded sill bands on the second and third floors, along with a main band above the ground floor. The ground floor windows are round-arched and adorned with vermiculated keystones, while the ground floor itself is horizontally rusticated. The building has a moulded plinth and vermiculated and rusticated quoins, with a total of twelve ranges of sash windows.
The first floor windows have moulded surrounds, gadrooned keystones, frames with pulvinated friezes, triangular pediments, and balustrades on consoles featuring vase-shaped balusters. Above the pediments, two triglyph-like consoles connect to the cills of the second-floor windows, which also have moulded surrounds and cornices. The third-floor windows are separated by sunk and moulded panels, have plain pilasters, and brackets supporting the cornices. The areas are enclosed with cast iron railings that have baluster finials. The elevation facing St George's Street is a simplified version of the main facade, featuring twelve window ranges, one of which is blind.
