Description

Innholders Hall, located at 29 College Street, dates back to 1670, with the front block possibly rebuilt in 1886 and alterations made after damage during World War II. The front block, which has a return to Whittington Garden, is designed in a late 17th century style and constructed of red brick and Portland stone. It stands three storeys high and features a cornice and parapet at the roof. The entrance is framed by brick pilasters and has a shaped pediment above a carved coat of arms. A small original doorway made of carved wood is incorporated into a later door, with flanking consoles and drops supporting a scroll pediment.

Inside, the Old Court Room retains a rich plaster ceiling dated 1670, along with intact panelling and a notable chimneypiece. Above this room, the New Courtroom features an enriched ceiling that exhibits mid-18th century characteristics, although it lacks other old fittings. A staircase window contains stained glass from the late 17th century. The hall itself has plain, late 17th century panelling but a modern ceiling. There is a refixed gallery in the north-east corner, and a modern square-headed window on the south side is set in patched brickwork, with some original elements remaining. The building is scheduled as an ancient monument.
