Description
Dyers' Hall, built between 1839 and 1840, is located on Dowgate Hill and was possibly designed by Charles Dyer. The building features a frontage to College Street and has a mid to late 19th-century front block that displays Palladian architectural style. It consists of four storeys plus a high basement and dormers, with five windows on the main facade, one on a canted corner, and two on the return. The structure is made of red brick with painted dressings above a channelled, arcaded stone ground storey. The first and second storeys are supported by an order of four Ionic pilasters, which hold up a pediment with a lunette against the attic, topped by a cornice and parapet. The side windows consist of five lights. The main entrance is located to the right of the front and features rich cast iron gates.
The earlier side elevation is stuccoed and has three storeys with three windows, but five windows on the channelled ground storey. The first-floor windows are framed by an order of Doric pilasters topped by urns and a balustrade beneath square windows above. A large, bracketed cornice with blocking is present, along with area railings supported by granite posts.
Inside, access is through a vaulted passage that is partly floored with decorative tiles. The interior is generally unremarkable, except for the Court Room on the first floor of the earlier building, which features an altered beamed ceiling and marbled Corinthian colonnades at either end. There is a plain chimney-piece made of dark marble and later 19th-century mahogany wainscot.
