Description
Drake House and Lonsdale House, built in 1881, are located on Dowgate Hill. They are designed in a simplified gothic style using red brick and terra cotta. The buildings rise four storeys plus a basement and feature dormers on a slated mansard roof. Nos 3 and 5 have an additional plain storey and a mansard roof. The ground storey is plain, made of polished brown granite and plate glass. The first-floor windows have enriched, pointed arches, while segmental arches are found above them. Nos 6 and 7 have a corbelled cornice and an arcaded parapet. No 3 has been refaced on the north side due to the destruction of an adjoining building. There is a vaulted entrance passage to No 4, which is adorned with rich wrought iron gates and a coat of arms above. The rear elevation, made of red brick and stone, continues the late 17th-century style of the courtyard, featuring an arcaded ground storey and a large timber modillion cornice above the second storey.
