Description

Tallow Chandlers Hall, built between 1671 and 1672, is a three-storey courtyard building located at the rear of Nos 3 to 7 Dowgate Hill, accessible via a passage between Nos 3 and 5. The structure is made of red brick with painted stone dressings and features a large timber cornice with modillions. The ground storey has an arcade with an open cloister on the west side, behind which are kitchens, and a hall situated above. The tympana of the arches on this side are filled with carved decorations. Above, there is a central window with five lights, enhanced by circular clerestory openings. A staircase is located in the north-east corner, with a parlour on the first floor of the north range and a court room above. The south range is shallow and also three storeys high, while the east side is formed by the taller rear of Nos 3 to 7.

The staircase has been reconstructed but retains original twisted balusters at the top. The hall features fine panelling with a carved frieze below the clerestory, a small three-sided oriel on the west, and a richly carved screen with engaged columns leading to the staircase. An elaborately carved niche with a coat of arms is found at the south end. The clerestory is adorned with decorated pilasters and a small cove to the enriched plaster ceiling, which may have been partly renewed. The parlour contains original fine panelling, carved doorcases, chimney pieces, and an enriched ceiling. The court room is simpler but maintains its original seating arrangement.

The north side of the building, facing Cloak Lane, is largely featureless except for a narrow early 20th-century façade at the west end, which is three storeys high with one window. This façade is in a mid-17th century style made of Portland stone, featuring a doorway with a richly carved hood on brackets, enriched mullioned and transomed windows above, a cornice on the first floor, and a pediment on the second. A large modillion cornice continues from Skinners' Hall to the west, and there is a railing and gate leading to the forecourt. The building is scheduled as an ancient monument.
