Description
No 22 College Hill, dating from around 1680, is a former double gatehouse likely designed by Nicholas Barbon. It features an impressively grand stone front that has been painted. The building has two main storeys and includes two round arched entrances with double gates and wooden tympanums. Each entrance is framed by bolection moulded surrounds and segmental pediments supported by carved brackets, with richly carved ornamentation above. Above the entrances are circular windows with carved surrounds. A small shop has been inserted in the center, which includes square and round arched windows above it. The building has a plain parapet, while the rear is constructed of red brick, partly rendered, and features a wooden eaves cornice leading to a tiled roof with dormers. The central part of the building is set forward, but the entire structure has undergone significant alterations.
