Description

Stationers' Hall is a building from the late 17th century and later, with the hall dating around 1670 and refaced by Robert Mylne in 1800. The east side is constructed of Portland stone and features four round-arched windows and a doorway with an arch above. There is a small cornice and a high parapet adorned with Coade stone panels. The entrance is approached by semi-circular steps and is flanked by a pair of ornamental lamp standards. A second, lower entrance leads to the basement. The building also has a fine lead rainwater head, while the rear is rendered in a plain manner.

Inside, the hall has a coved plaster ceiling that reflects 19th-century design. Notable interior features include a fine original screen, a modest staircase, doorcases, and dresser panelling, all with intricate carving. There is also 19th-century stained glass. The Stock Room to the east contains further fine carved 17th-century joinery, and this area, along with the adjoining staircase, dates from 1887. This wing has a high basement and is faced in Portland stone, topped with a slated roof and a low spire above a bay window. At the south end of the hall, there is a small stone-faced addition with an entrance below. The courtroom to the north of the rear garden has been rebuilt but retains some 18th-century features. To the west, there is a simple, original one-storey building that has been stuccoed, featuring mullioned and transomed windows and a hipped, tiled roof. The south side of the garden is enclosed by St Martin's Church. The building is scheduled as an ancient monument.
