Description

The four lamp posts located outside the western entrance to St Paul's Cathedral are large cast iron structures from 1874, designed by FC Penrose. These Victorian lamp posts, originally gas-powered, were converted to electrical supply in the 20th century. They are positioned on a piazza within a boundary of granite bollards, with a pair flanking the central Queen Anne statue.

Each lamp post features a circular base topped by a moulded square-section pillar adorned with decorative brackets. The mouldings include cast panels depicting foliage, crossed swords, and a date mark of 1874. The bases are finished with four protruding cherubs set among more foliage. Rising from the base is a tall, four-sided column with panelled fluting that supports the lantern. This lantern showcases additional cast decorations, including rose medallions. It is held by four brackets and features an opaque glass lantern with a slender octagonal cast iron frame and a single access door. Above the lantern, a ventilation grille is placed beneath a saucer-shaped dome, which is topped with a ball moulding that has flame-shaped petals and a pointed finial.
