Description
The Church of St Martin, built between 1677 and 1687 by Sir Christopher Wren, is a Grade I listed building located on Ludgate Hill. The church features a square body with a design that includes four composite columns and pilasters, which define a barrel-vaulted Greek Cross. The interior has flat-ceiled corner compartments and three arched openings on the south side that lead to entrance lobbies and a vestry, which have been altered, along with a gallery above. Notable interior features include three carved doorcases, a west gallery with a carved organ case, a carved pulpit, a reredos, a doorcase to the north vestry, and a white marble font with a wooden cover. The east and west sides of the church are obscured. The south front is made of Portland stone and has three doorways, two of which are disused, along with three windows above. The center of the front rises as a tower flanked by large consoles above the parapet, topped with an octagonal upper stage and a shaped spire that includes a gallery. The rear elevation, which faces the garden of Stationers' Hall, is constructed of red brick with slight Portland stone dressings and features a rendered parapet with a small central gable above a circular window. There is a single-storey vestry that appears to be from the late 17th century but has been partly rendered and partly refaced.
